Travel and Your Device
Having a pacemaker, defibrillator (ICD), or loop recorder doesn’t mean giving up travel. With a few simple steps, you can feel confident enjoying holidays, family trips, and overseas adventures.
Before you go
Carry your device ID card – it’s helpful if you ever need medical care while away.
Check with your clinic – if you’ll be travelling for several weeks, let them know.
Take your monitor if advised – otherwise, your device will store information and send it once you reconnect.
At the airport
Security scanners are generally safe, but they may detect your implanted device. Let airport staff know you have a pacemaker or defibrillator and show them your ID card prior to passing through security — they’ll follow their protocol for people with implanted heart devices.
On your trip
Most people with heart devices travel without any problems. You can usually enjoy normal activities like sightseeing, swimming, or relaxing by the beach. Just follow your doctor’s advice if you have specific limits.
Reassurance for you
Travelling with a heart device is safe and straightforward. With a little preparation, you can focus on making memories — your device is there to support your life, not hold you back.
