Frequently Asked Questions
We know living with a heart device can bring up questions. Here are some of the most common ones, answered simply and clearly.
Why does my monitoring come through Heart Care Connect?
Your cardiologist has chosen to partner with Heart Care Connect because we provide the highest possible standard of monitoring.
We don’t just review alerts — we:
Check your data daily with Australian-based pacing technicians.
Maintain a low number of patients per technician, so you always receive personal attention rather than being “lost in the system.”
Provide direct access to a technician for your questions.
Offer prompt connectivity support (without overseas call centres).
Give you access to education and a supportive community of people living with heart devices.
With Heart Care Connect, you’re not just monitored — you’re supported, informed, and connected.
Is remote monitoring compulsory?
No. Enrolling in remote monitoring is voluntary, but it is strongly recommended by international guidelines as the standard of care for people with heart devices.
How do I know if my monitor is connected?
Most monitors connect automatically. If it loses connection for several days, we will contact you to help you reconnect. Don’t worry — any data your device stores will be sent once the monitor reconnects.
Can changes be made to my device remotely?
Pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs): No. Remote monitoring only sends information — the settings cannot be changed remotely. Any adjustments are made during in-clinic visits.
Loop recorders: Yes, in some cases. Newer loop recorders allow remote programming changes to optimise how they sense and record arrhythmias.
What should I do if my implanted device beeps or vibrates?
Don’t panic. It usually means your device is alerting your clinic to something. Contact your device clinic or Heart Care Connect for guidance. If you feel unwell, call 000.
What should I do if my bedside monitor is beeping or flashing?
If your monitor is making noise or flashing, you can switch it off if it’s bothering you. Then contact a Heart Care Connect technician when available — we’ll guide you step by step to get it reconnected and working again. Don’t worry — your device stores all the information, and once your monitor reconnects, all the data will be transferred. Nothing is lost.
Is remote monitoring safe and private?
Yes. Remote monitoring is secure and uses encrypted systems. Only your cardiologist, and qualified technicians (such as those at Heart Care Connect) have access. Manufacturers may access data to troubleshoot technical issues, but only through secure systems.
Does remote monitoring replace clinic visits?
No. Remote monitoring gives extra reassurance between visits, but in-person appointments are still needed and will continue as your doctor advises.
What happens if I go into an arrhythmia?
Your device will often record the event and transmits the data to your clinic. If it’s concerning, your cardiologist will be notified and you may be contacted. If you feel unwell, always call 000 or go to the emergency department.
What happens when the battery runs low?
Your doctor will schedule a replacement procedure before the battery runs out. This is usually a straightforward day procedure, where the old device is swapped for a new one using the same leads. Batteries don’t stop suddenly — they give plenty of warning through checks and remote monitoring.
Can I use household appliances with my device?
Yes. Everyday appliances like microwaves, TVs, computers, and induction cooktops are safe. Just avoid holding magnets directly over your device. Industrial equipment such as arc welders or strong magnets should be avoided unless cleared by your doctor.
Can I use my mobile phone?
Yes. Mobile phones are safe. Newer mobile phones contain magnets so its best to avoid carrying it in a shirt pocket directly over your device.
Can I exercise with a heart device?
Most people can return to normal activities after recovery. Walking, swimming, and light gym exercise are usually safe. Always follow your cardiologist’s guidance.
Can I travel with my device?
Yes. Travel is safe with a heart device. Always carry your device ID card and let airport staff know before security checks. Your device will not stop you from flying, going on holidays, or enjoying overseas trips.
Do I need to take my home monitor with me when I travel?
It depends. Some people take their monitor with them, especially for longer trips. If you don’t, your device will store the information and send it once you reconnect. For longer absences, let your clinic know you’ll be away and seek their advice.
Who can I talk to if I have more questions?
That’s what we’re here for. At Heart Care Connect, you can speak directly with Australian-based pacing technicians who understand your device and your concerns.
